How to Choose the Right Office Chair for You

How to Choose the Right Office Chair for You

Choosing an office chair isn’t just about looks - it’s about comfort, support and functionality to help you feel your best throughout the workday. Whether you're working from home or fitting out a professional clinic or office, the right chair can make a world of difference to your posture, productivity and long-term health.

Here's a simple guide to help you find your perfect fit.

1. Synchro vs Multi-Lever Mechanism

This is the heart of how your chair moves.
Synchro mechanism chairs have a seat and backrest that tilt in harmony - great for introducing movement into your sitting and for users who prefer simple adjustments.
- Multi-lever mechanism chairs allow you to independently adjust seat tilt, back angle and height - perfect for those who like total control over their sitting position or have specific injury or postural needs.

2. Mesh vs Fabric Backrest

This comes down to personal comfort and aesthetic preferences
- Mesh backrests offer excellent airflow and are ideal for warmer environments or users who tend to run hot.
- Fabric backrests provide a more cushioned, traditional feel and can give a warmer, more upholstered look to a space.

3. Price Point & Budget

There’s something for every budget in our range:
Entry Level Chairs ($): These chairs offer all the ergonomic support you need, without the bells and whistles. Perfect for home offices or occasional use.
Mid-Range Chairs ($$): This is where most people will sit (pun intended!). These chairs balance affordability with additional ergonomic features and enhanced comfort.
Executive Chairs ($$$): These are top-of-the-line, premium chairs with luxury finishes, additional features and advanced adjustability - ideal for those who want something a little special or for executive offices.

4. Arms or No Arms?

Armrests can provide added support and comfort, especially during long hours at your desk. However, they’re not always necessary depending on your setup. If you work at a height-adjustable desk or prefer a minimalist feel, a chair without arms might suit you better. Keep in mind that armrests can sometimes interfere with proper desk positioning - if your chair can’t get close enough to the desk, it may prevent you from maintaining an optimal ergonomic posture. Many of our chairs offer optional adjustable arms, so you can customise your setup.

5. Is Your Desk Higher Than Average?

If you’re working at a higher-than-average surface, like a counter or standing desk, a drafting kit is essential. These kits include a foot ring and a taller gas lift to help you stay ergonomically supported, even at elevated workspaces.

6. Is Colour a Priority for You?

All of our chairs come in classic black - sleek, timeless and professional. However, if colour is your top priority, we have select models available in alternative finishes. Keep in mind that colour preferences may narrow down your options slightly, so it’s something to factor in early during your decision-making. You can view our Colour Pop range here.

7. What is AFRDI Blue Tick Certification - and Should You Care?

Absolutely. The AFRDI Blue Tick is a certification mark awarded by the Australasian Furnishing Research and Development Institute. It means a chair has undergone independent testing to meet strict Australian and New Zealand standards for safety, strength, durability, ergonomics and stability. It's also a great indicator of weight capacity, with many Blue Tick chairs rated up to 135kg or 160kg for heavy-duty use.

While AFRDI-certified chairs offer extra peace of mind - especially for those who spend long hours seated or need a higher weight rating - it’s important to note that many of our other chairs would likely pass these same tests. However, the certification process is quite costly, so only our most popular and long-standing models have been put forward for the testing.

If the Blue Tick is a priority for you, we’ve got you covered - but rest assured that all our chairs are built with quality, comfort and durability in mind, whether certified or not.
